Our French library is amazing, and we travel throughout our region at least every six to eight weeks with books and DVDs (four times per year to Haida Gwaii). SERVICES FOR NEW FRANCOPHONES TO OUR REGION (INCLUDING IMMIGRANTS)

In partnership with Hecate Strait Economic Development Society, AFFNO offers support (including translation, helping find services, support, etc.) for new Francophones (Canadians but also immigrants) in our region. We do it in person in Prince Rupert, or via correspondence. Call AFFNO 250-627-1313, or Hecate Strait 250-624-9498 for more info.

FRENCH CLASSES

Throughout our region, we offer from time to time, in partnership with Canadian Parents for French (CPF), French classes. Dates of these classes are always published in our newsletters, or on the CPF Facebook pages. Also, we currently offer a Coffee Club in French in Prince Rupert every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, at the new Hecate Strait office (same building as Cargo Kitchen) at 3:30 p.m.

MULTICULTURALISM

In partnership with North Coast Immigration and Multicultural Services Society (Prince Rupert) and Skeena Diversity (Terrace), we do our best to combine efforts with other cultures that exist in the northwest. For example, we participate at the Multicultural Fair (Prince Rupert) every November.

TAXES FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES

This is a service we offer in both Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii, depending on the circumstance (in English or French). If an AFFNO member or a friend of AFFNO knows someone who requires assistance, we can offer them help with filing their taxes, providing that they are considered a low-income family.

PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE

We work hard alongside CPF, parents, and teachers to ensure that French Immersion (or in some cases, French as a second language) continues to receive the support in our northwestern schools. For example, if a School District decides it wants to cut French from its curriculum, we will be there to fight against it. And same thing if they wish to add French Immersion; we will be there to offer support.

ORGANISATION OF CULTURAL EVENTS

AFFNO, with the aid and support of our partners, celebrate the following cultural events throughout our region : SUGAR SHACK FESTIVAL in January (Prince Rupert); FRANCO-FUN FESTIVAL in February (Kitimat); FRANCO-FUN SKI DAY in March (Smithers); LITERACY NOW in March (Prince Rupert); SAINT-JEAN BAPTISTE in June (Terrace); THE FRENCH BOOK FESTIVAL in September (Smithers); OUR MURDER MYSTERY in October (Prince Rupert); and THE MULTICULTURAL FAIR in November (Prince Rupert).
